GET WEIRD!
101 Innovative Ways To Make Your Company A Great Place To Work.
By John Putzier, john@firstepinc.com
Amacom (American Management Association)
Nearly 25 years ago, while I was working in HRD for a Fortune 50 firm and
constantly challenged to find innovative solutions to workforce problems, I
started a "Tomorrow File". The folder was a place for great ideas that
didn't have immediate application- typically something I read that other
people were doing that was really cool. Over the years, I would look into
the Tomorrow File whenever I was stuck for a solution to a problem. Even
though the answer wasn't always there, the time spent helped break
conventional thinking and unlocked the traditional "box" we tend to find
ourselves in.
Opening an advanced copy of John Putzier's book was more than an
"out-of-the-box" experience. It was a "jack-in-the-box" experience with
great ideas jumping out at you one after another. (Except you didn't need
to keep cranking through the music).Written with a thick coating of humor,
the 100 ideas (and 1 challenge) are organized for recruiting, retention,
culture, T&D and more. John acknowledges his sources- the companies who
have put some of these ideas into practice (maybe yours is among them) and
keeps it light throughout with his thoughts about how to customize. A
quick scan of "The Wall of Shame", "Bozo Filters", "Headhunter Hostage
Pay", or DORK (Delay offer rejection questionnaire) is sure to spark some
creative juices. This is a "tomorrow file" for today. John Putzier is a
great professional and a founder and former predident of SHRM's HiTech
professional emphasis group. For some reason he lives in Pittsburgh.
You can order John's book through AMACOM, by calling1-866-GET WEIRD or via
a companion website to www.FirstepInc.com that will be up and
running this month at www.GetWeird.net (where you will also be able
purchase an e-version of Get Weird using live transaction software). And
no, we don't get any kickbacks but, I may add "Who To Call When Stuck in
Pittsburgh" to my "tomorrow file".
